CHAIRity Event Raises Funds for Domestic Violence Victims
Nov. 12, 2004
Victims of domestic violence will receive more counseling and client services
from the proceeds raised at the fifth annual CHAIRity event, "Sit a Moment,
Stop the Violence," 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, at the Arizona Science Center,
600 E. Washington St.
Ten chairs, designed by graduating students of the Arizona State University
Interior Design Program, will be on display and sold through a silent auction
at the event. Each chair reflects the style of a well-known artist and makes
a statement about domestic violence.
Inspiration came from Paul Klee, Leonardo de Vinci, Frida Kahlo, Andy Warhol
and others. The chairs are on display at Phoenix City Hall atrium, 200 W.
Washington St. during business hours through Nov. 18.
Proceeds from the chair sales and the dinner will benefit the Phoenix Family
Advocacy Center that provides comprehensive services to domestic violence
and sexual abuse victims and their families in a safe and supportive environment.
"Domestic violence is a major problem in our country and our community. We
hope this event will help raise public awareness about its devastating effects
not only on the victim but on the family," said Phoenix Vice Mayor Peggy Bilsten,
event honorary chair. "With the funds that are raised, we hope to expand the
center's services, which include counseling, financial assistance, medical
services and support groups for the elderly, children, and English- and non-English-speaking
victims.
The event is sponsored by Southwest Ambulance, The Arizona Republic, BlueCross
BlueShield of Arizona, city of Phoenix Aviation Department, HMS Host, and
US Business Interiors.
