Historic Listing Recommended for Circles Records and Others
Oct. 20, 2004
The Phoenix Historic Preservation Commission voted this week to recommend
the listing of the following properties and neighborhoods on the city's historic
property register:
Circles Records & Tapes, 800 N. Central Ave., formerly Stewart Motor Co.,
built in 1947
Garfield and North Garfield historic districts, these two new districts
would expand and replace smaller historic districts already in place in
the Garfield neighborhood
Dr. George M. Brockway House, 506 E. Portland St., built in 1909
Alwun House, 1204 E. Roosevelt St., formerly John Sedler House, built
in 1912
The Historic Preservation Office and Commission factor the age, integrity
and historical significance of properties and neighborhoods when making their
decisions. The next step for these recommendations is the Central City Village
Planning Committee, followed by the city Planning Commission. City Council
then has the final say on which properties and neighborhoods are listed.
The Historic Preservation Office has designated 36 neighborhood districts,
8 non-residential districts and 152 individual properties since 1986, when
the Roosevelt neighborhood was the first listed.
