City Recognized by Maricopa Association of Governments
Oct. 29, 2004
The city of Phoenix has been recognized by Maricopa Association of Governments
with a MAG Livable Communities Award. The award recognizes developers, property
managers, cities or employers who have made a special effort to improve transit
facilities, the design of buildings, telework spaces, transit amenities or
parking management programs. The award was given in recognition of efforts
made along 7th Avenue between Camelback and Indian School.
Pedestrian Amenities Along 7th Avenue is a public/private partnership created
to develop prototypes for both city public spaces and private development
along 7th Avenue between Camelback and Indian School Road.
The project is a collaborative effort between the city of Phoenix, Neighborhood
Services' 7th Avenue Merchants Neighborhood Fight Back Program, the Joint
Urban Design Center and School of Architecture at Arizona State University
and Arizona Department of Transportation. It is the result of a three-year
research and design effort to develop an urban revitalization strategy for
the area.
The MAG Livable Communities Award celebrates this project and its efforts
to keep the Valley a healthy and attractive place to live and work.
This area is one of the city's two commercial revitalization pilot projects.
In addition, it is one of two Fight Back areas, 7th Ave Merchants and Palomino,
with the unique distinction of being lead by local business alliances. In
these areas, businesses have spearheaded the Fight Back program in an effort
to support revitalization efforts in the communities where they do business.
