Renovated Affordable Housing Communities Boost Sunnyslope
Oct. 27, 2004
The Phoenix Housing Department, along with Vice Mayor Peggy Bilsten, residents
and other city officials, celebrated the re-opening of three renovated apartment
communities in the Sunnyslope neighborhood today. Windrose Villas, 1420/1520
W. Peoria Ave, Foothills Court, 1606 W. Peoria Ave., and Sahuaro West, 1650
W. Sahuaro Drive, are now part of the Housing Department's Affordable Housing
section.
Before the city bought and renovated the properties last year, they were
in poor condition. Some units were boarded up and unsafe for residents. The
Housing Department undertook major renovations, upgrading interiors, installing
new walkways and even constructing new swimming pools and playgrounds. The
three properties include 256 newly renovated, affordable apartment homes.
The Housing Department's Affordable Housing section now owns and oversees
the management of 16 apartment communities, with a total of 1,252 units. Rents
are $125 to $250 below market rates. Residents generally have incomes around
40 to 60 percent of the median, but people with up to 80 percent of median
income may qualify.
There are still vacancies in the new communities.
The public can call 602-943-5230 to see if they qualify.
