A 750-home housing development, a Neighborhood Resource Center and dozens of new infill homes on formerly blighted, vacant lots are part of a South Mountain Neighborhood Revitalization strategy that has earned the city of Phoenix Neighborhood Services Department a prestigious Agency Award of Excellence from the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) in Washington, D.C.
“The real winners are our neighborhood residents and private sector partners who work so hard to make community-based revitalization happen in Phoenix,” said Acting Deputy Neighborhood Services Director Kate Krietor. “We look forward to working together to achieve even more.”
The South Mountain strategy features the 750-home Copper Leaf development at 24th Street and Roeser Road, partnerships to build more than 150 infill homes, a multi-use trail from South Mountain Municipal Park to the Rio Salado Habitat Restoration Area and a master plan for the gateway intersection of 24th Street and Broadway Road, which includes the 13,000-square-foot Neighborhood Resources Center. The center’s grand opening is set for December.
The department was presented the award at NAHRO’s National Conference on Tuesday, Oct. 11 in Chicago. NAHRO is a leading advocate for adequate, affordable housing and strong communities across America. Its members administer a variety of federal housing programs worth more than $1.2 billion. Among NAHRO’s more than 3,250 agency members, Phoenix is one of only 21 to earn an Award of Excellence.
