Phoenix and Valley law enforcement officials today announced that Mark Goudeau will be charged with nine counts of first-degree murder, eight of which are related to crime cases in Phoenix. The other count is related to a case in Tempe.
Overall, there are 71 charges that Phoenix Police and law enforcement officials are submitting to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.
Police said Goudeau, who was arrested in September, began a spree of sexual assaults and killings in August 2005.
"The largest investigation in the history of the Phoenix Police Department is now before the Maricopa County Attorney – a 15,000-page report," said Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon during a press conference this morning at Phoenix City Hall. "To all our partner law enforcement agencies, I say 'thank you.'"
"To our residents, we couldn't have done it without you," Gordon added.
Gordon commended the dogged determination and collaborative work from several law enforcement agencies throughout the Valley.
Police Chief Jack Harris said that the Police Department followed more than 8,000 leads in its investigations with other law enforcement entities.
"We are submitting 71 criminal charges to the County Attorney for prosecution against Mark Goudeau," said Harris.
Police said that Goudeau's last known attack was in June, when he abducted a woman from a carwash near 32nd Street and Thomas Road and killed her.
