Seven to be Honored at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast

Celebrate the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday at the MLK "Stand up for Justice" Awards Breakfast 7 - 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 12, at the Phoenix Convention Center West Building, Third Floor Ballroom, 100 N. Third St. Doors open at 6:30 a.m.

The event will honor six winners of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Living the Dream Awards and one winner of the Calvin C. Goode Lifetime Achievement Award, Phoenix residents who have contributed significantly to creating a compassionate and socially just society. The event is sponsored by the Arizona Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee and supported by the Phoenix Human Relations Commission.

Cost is $50 per person or $500 for a table of 10. Reservation deadline is 5 p.m. Jan. 8. To purchase individual tickets, call the Convention Center Box Office at 602-262-7272. For more information or to purchase a table, call 602-254-5081.

Calvin C. Goode Lifetime Achievement award

Bishop Henry Barnwell, retired pastor of the First New Life Baptist Church.

The Calvin C. Goode Lifetime Achievement award recognizes an exceptional individual who has made Phoenix a better place through a lifelong dedication to promoting social and economic justice, defending civil rights and enhancing the dignity of all people. The award is named for former Phoenix City Councilman Calvin C. Goode, who worked to ensure these

rights for all residents during his 22-year tenure with the council.

Helen Drake, retired administrator of the Aging Services Division, city of Phoenix Human Services Department

Rory Gilbert, manager of diversity initiatives, Maricopa Community College District

Anthony Lopez, diversity director, Maricopa County

Andrew “AJ” Miller, director of African-American Outreach, Arizona State Democratic Party

Hubert A. Ross Sr., founder and director, Career/Leadership Development Program

Dr. Raul Yzaguirre, executive director and presidential professor of practice, Center for Community Development and Civic Rights, Arizona State University
