The Arizona Department of Transportation has completed installation of traffic lights and other interim improvements at the I-17 and Carefree Highway interchange. To help with traffic flow at the busy intersection, ADOT worked with Maricopa County Supervisor Andrew Kunasek, State Rep. Pamela Gorman, Councilwoman Peggy Neely and the Phoenix Street Transportation Department. The signals were installed at the ramp intersections of I-17 and Carefree Highway. Also, the westbound lanes of Carefree Highway were expanded to include two left turn lanes for traffic heading south onto I-17 and the northbound I-17 exit ramp was widened. ADOT is finalizing its study efforts and will begin designing the permanent intersection improvements this spring to include a longer, wider Carefree Highway bridge over I-17 and improved connections with I-17.
"These changes will make rides to work, school and home easier and safer for thousands of people," said Neely. "We appreciate all of the teamwork that has gone into making this happen."
Nearby, North Valley Parkway between Dixileta Drive and Sonoran Parkway is now open to traffic. This route will provide an alternate for north-south traffic between Happy Valley Road and Carefree Highway. There may still be minor work and restrictions through March.
