Fine Arts College Honors Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture

Arizona State University’s Katherine K. Herberger College of Fine Arts has recognized the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture with its Partner 2005 Award for outstanding contributions to the arts, community and education.

Robert Wills, dean of the college, and Melanie Ohm, director of partnerships, presented the award to the Office of Arts and Culture’s Education Program this week during a Phoenix Arts and Culture Commission meeting.

The education program has implemented several initiatives in the past five years that have used arts and education to bring art communities and schools together.

Those initiatives, which serve children, teachers and artists in and out of school, include:

PAC Arts - Offered by the Office of Arts and Culture in collaboration with the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department and the Herberger College, the program placed teaching artists and artist interns in the city’s after-school programs.

ArtSource – The Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture sponsors the annual event so arts organizations can inform schools about arts education opportunities for K – 12 students.

Phoenix Arts Collaborative 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant - The program is a collaboration involving the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture, the Arts and Sciences in Education Network (ASEN), Phoenix Elementary School District and the Herberger College. The Arizona Department of Education has provided a five-year grant for the program, which provides after-school services at Phoenix Elementary District schools. The ASEN partners include: Arizona Jewish Theatre Company, Childsplay, Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, Great Arizona Puppet Theatre, Phoenix Bach Choir, Phoenix Conservatory of Music, Phoenix Symphony, Phoenix Theatre and Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art.

The Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture was established by the Phoenix City Council in 1985 to advance the growth and development of the arts and cultural community. The Office of Arts and Culture manages the city's Public Art Program, Arts Education Program, Arts Grants Program and cultural planning initiatives.
