Mayors “Bet” on Suns and Mavericks Showdown

Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and Dallas Mayor Laura Miller have agreed to the following wager: Miller will wear a Phoenix Suns jersey during a City Council meeting if the Dallas Mavericks lose the basketball series, and Gordon will wear a Mavericks jersey should the Suns lose.

Should Gordon win, Miller has agreed to buy breakfast for the entire staff of a selected Phoenix police and fire station, with Gordon serving the meals. The same agreement holds true for the Dallas mayor. (see fact sheet)

“Our entire city is excited about the Western Conference Finals and I’m confident our Phoenix Suns will be headed to the NBA finals,” said Gordon.

Miller said, “Mavericks Mania is spreading across north Texas. I’ve already contacted the Dallas Mavericks and asked them to have Dirk Nowitzki sign a #41 jersey in Mayor Gordon’s size, because I have no doubt our Mavs can win the Western Conference Finals.”

Gordon has picked a Steve Nash jersey to send to Dallas and Miller would send a Dirk Nowitzki jersey. Gordon has already ordered the Nash jersey!

FACT SHEET

  • If the Phoenix Suns win, Mayor Laura Miller will buy breakfast for Phoenix firefighters at Station #9, 3030 E. Fairmont Ave.. The station is one of the busiest stations in the city and responded to more than 8,000 calls last year.
  • The Dallas mayor also will buy breakfast for the Phoenix police officers who work on the Maryvale Neighborhood Enforcement Team, a squad involved in an intensive effort to reduce crime and revitalize west Phoenix neighborhoods.
  • If the Mavericks win, Mayor Phil Gordon will buy breakfast for Dallas firefighters who work at a station that received the “Hot House Award” last year for being that city’s busiest station.
  • In addition, Gordon will buy breakfast for Dallas police officers who work at a precinct that leads in crime reduction this year.
  • The winning mayor also will help serve the free breakfast for the police officers and firefighters.
