Councilman Simplot Hosts Fourth Season of Moonlight Movies
Phoenix’s signature outdoor films, the Moonlight Movies, are returning for their fourth season starting in April. The Moonlight Movies are hosted by Councilman Tom Simplot. The films in this year’s series are “All About Eve,” “Napoleon Dynamite,” “The Goonies,” “Jurassic Park,” and “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.” The films will be held at Steele Indian School Park, Third Street and Indian School Road, start at sundown and are free to the public.
“Movies in the park have been so well received that I am often asked ‘when’s the next one showing?’” said Simplot of the series. “It’s a great way to spend an evening with family and friends under the stars, and can be a very economical and fun first date!”
The Moonlight Movies film series kicks off Friday, April 13, with the 1950 Bette Davis classic, “All About Eve,” as part of the Phoenix’s gay and lesbian Pride Festival. This classic story of ambition, manipulation and betrayal is known for its brilliant dialog, including Davis’ legendary line “Fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a bumpy night.”
The next film in the series is a screening of “Napoleon Dynamite” on Saturday, May 19. This off-the-wall comedy became a huge hit in 2004 and catapulted a relatively unknown actor, Jon Heder, into the limelight.
In this film, the listless Napoleon finds his purpose by helping his friend win class presidency. His “Vote for Pedro” t-shirts quickly became the rage for young people across the country.
Third in the series is the family adventure film, “The Goonies,” on Saturday, June 16. The movie features a group of kids that includes Sean Astin, Josh Brolin and Corey Feldman, who embark on a wild adventure involving a pirate’s treasure map and an underground maze filled with traps and skeletons. “The Goonies” is fun for all ages.
“Jurassic Park” will open our fall season on Saturday, Sept. 22. A dinosaur theme park goes wild in this 1993 film directed by Steven Spielberg. This science fiction terror flick is rated PG13, so hang onto your little tikes because the dinosaurs are coming!
Moonlight Movies 2007 concludes on Saturday, Oct. 27, with two family-favorite films to start your Halloween festivities early. The first feature is the animated “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.” This fall-season favorite highlights the misadventures of the Peanuts gang as they celebrate Halloween.
The celebration continues with our feature presentation of “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.” This film introduces us to our magical hero Harry Potter and his friends in the first of a series of popular books and movies. Come out and get the Halloween weekend started with “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.”
