Housing Department Earns Four NAHRO Awards of Merit

The National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) recently recognized four city of Phoenix Housing Department developments and programs with the organization’s Award of Merit.

The four were recognized during NAHRO’s Summer Conference in Chicago on July 20, for excellence in providing important services and a better living environment to residents of public and affordable housing. Recognition was given to:

  • The Administrative Support Program, an educational certification program for adults implemented through a partnership with the city of Phoenix Housing Department, Harmon Branch Library and Phoenix College. The program offered office administration skills, and more than half who enrolled earned their certificate.

  • The Sidney P. Osborn HVAC Project upgraded the cooling systems of the Sidney P. Osborn apartments, 1720 E. Adams St. The project replaced the old cooling system at the 145-unit, multi-family public housing apartment complex, providing a better living environment for residents. The project also will decrease water usage, lower maintenance costs and improve environmental sustainability.

  • The Roosevelt Commons Apartments, an example of a highly successful infill project, combining affordable housing with historic preservation in one of the city's finest neighborhoods. The project involved the restoration of eight historic buildings constructed in the 1920s and new construction of five buildings. It takes up an entire city block, providing 48 affordable apartments, a clubhouse and two pavilions.

  • The Health and Safety Fair, an on-site fair held at the Maryvale Parkway Terrace Apartments to provide the elderly and residents with disabilities with information to assist them with their daily living needs. Residents were able to meet with various organizations to obtain information and register for services. Approximately 75 percent of the community participated.

The Roosevelt Commons Apartments and the Senior Health and Safety Fair have also been entered into the National Awards of Excellence competition. The Awards of Excellence recognize outstanding innovation and achievements in housing and community development programs throughout the country.
