The public is invited to attend an inauguration ceremony for the Mayor and Phoenix City Council at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, at the Orpheum Theatre, 203 W. Adams St.
Three new councilmembers, Thelda Williams, Maria Baier and Michael Nowakowski, will replace term-limited councilmembers Dave Siebert, Peggy Bilsten and Doug Lingner. Mayor Phil Gordon and Councilman Claude Mattox, who both were re-elected in September, also will take their oath of office. All the councilmembers will be sworn in by Mayor Gordon with each of their spouses holding the Bible. Angie Lopez, a friend of the Mayor, will swear in Gordon.
The Mayor and new councilmembers will provide brief remarks and be presented with an election certificate. The ceremony also will include the Phoenix Police and Fire Honor Guard, and performances by the Phoenix Boys Choir, Jesse McGuire and the Fiesta Mexicana Dance Troupe. The invocation will be given by Father Bob Binta and Rabbi Albert Plotkin will deliver the benediction. Pat Cantelme, a retired fire captain and former president of the United Phoenix Fire Fighters, will serve as the master of ceremonies. Following the event, there will be a reception in the City Hall atrium, 200 W. Washington St.
