Westside Senior Center Celebrates Grand Opening

The city of Phoenix Human Services Department today hosted the grand opening of the Westside Senior Center, 4115 W. Thomas Road, which included tours, speeches by city officials, brunch and a dance.

The new 10,000-square-foot senior center, formerly located in a one-room facility at a nearby Phoenix Urban League, now boasts a multipurpose room for large activities such as dances and holiday celebrations, and smaller rooms that will accommodate educational, recreational and social activities.

“This is certainly a good reason to celebrate,” said Mayor Phil Gordon. “Facilities like this one, and our commitment to what they represent, are what turn a big city into a caring community.”

Activities offered include educational classes and seminars, financial planning, cultural tours and field trips, exercise classes, arts and crafts, nutrition classes and health screenings, and support groups for caregivers. A computer lab will be available and computer classes will be offered. Attendees also will be able to obtain social services assistance from a caseworker who has been assigned to the facility.

“The center will provide a meeting place for seniors to stay connected and participate in civic activities. They can take special interest classes, get assistance when they need it or just hang out and have fun.” said District 4 Councilman Tom Simplot.

A light breakfast and nutritionally balanced lunch will be offered Mondays through Fridays. Also a caseworker will offer social services assistance to attendees. The center, which cost more than $2 million, was financed with 2001 bond funds.

The city's Human Services Department operates 17 senior centers, which provide people 60 years or older or adults with disabilities with nutrition programs, group meals, educational opportunities, recreation and social activities, information, referral, advocacy, transportation and counseling/casework services.
