Burton Barr Central Library will host artist Monica Aissa Martinez for a slide presentation and discussion of her work at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, in Pulliam Auditorium, 1221 N. Central Ave. The free program is part of Phoenix Public Library’s FirstMondays Art Salon.
Martinez’s use of color and form is vibrant, deliberately whimsical and playful. She works with materials such as casein, egg tempera, gouache, inks and pencil on paper or canvas, reworking each surface many times before she is satisfied.
Originally from El Paso, Martinez received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Texas and a Master of Fine Arts degree from New Mexico State University. In 2002, her artwork was profiled in the two-volume collection, “Contemporary Chicana and Chicano Art.”
Martinez currently teaches painting, drawing and two-dimensional design at Phoenix College.
FirstMondays is hosted by Ernest McIntyre, executive director of ArtsAZ. Starbucks at Seventh Street and McDowell Road will provide coffee for the event.
