Evelyn Smalley went to boot camp at Hunter College in New York and then worked as an x-ray technician during the second World War.
Johnene White also attended boot camp at Hunter College and served as parachute packer during the war.
Both ladies are among 21 World War II Navy Women veterans who will be honored April 29 at the Phoenix City Council chambers, 200 W. Jefferson St., during a policy session that begins at 2 p.m.
Unlike many tributes, this recognition focuses solely on Phoenix's surviving World War II veterans.
Each honoree is a serving member of the Cactus Waves, Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service, Unit 114, located in Phoenix.
Each member participates in local Veterans Day parades and conducts regular visits to fellow women veterans at the Arizona State Veterans Home.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that 2.8 million veterans of the 16 million men and women who served in the war still survive.
