Local Latino Arts Groups Get Boost from City of Phoenix

The city of Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture has awarded grants to four local cultural organizations that will spotlight Latino art forms and/or help bring the arts to Latinos in the community.

  • Cesar E. Chavez Foundation: $3,500 community arts project grant to support artistic fees and production costs for the development and performance of a one-act play that expresses the beliefs and philosophy of Cesar Chavez. Based on excerpts collected from Chavez's speeches, performances will be given to students, parents, and the general public. The play will be written by Zarco Guerrero and performed by Bruno Cisneros.

  • Colores Actors-Writers Workshop: $3,000 community arts project grant to support artistic fees and production expenses associated with a theatrical presentation of "Voices of Valor," a full-length dramatic play written by James Garcia and based on the oral histories of 500 Latino World War II veterans, family and friends.

  • Cultural Coalition: $2,500 community arts project grant to support artistic fees and production costs for La Pastorela, a 500-year Mexican/Chicano Teatro tradition that combines music, dance and comedy to recreate a secular interpretation of the shepherds play.

  • Teatro Bravo!: $2,125 community arts project grant to support artistic fees and production costs for Los Illegals, a play that dramatizes the struggles of immigrants seeking work in a day labor center and the fervent opposition of the community around it. The play, which is performed in English and Spanish, will include special activities with the Florence Immigrant Rights Project.

The Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture awarded $889,621 in grants to 79 nonprofit community organizations and schools for the 2008-09 fiscal year.

The grants will help the recipients fund a variety of activities, including artist residencies, workshops, performances, exhibits and festivals, and arts education. The grants support projects and programs that serve nearly two million Phoenix-area residents annually. The organizations are required to match the grant amounts at least dollar-for-dollar.

The Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture was established by the Phoenix City Council in 1985 to promote and support arts and culture in Phoenix. The office is advised by the 21-member citizens’ Phoenix Arts and Culture Commission. For more information, visit phoenix.gov/arts or call 602-262-4637.
