Psychologist Michael Brad Bayless, Ph.D., will share his expertise about mental and emotional health in the African-American community at the free Faces of Diversity Brown Bag luncheon series noon to 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, at the Phoenix City Council Chambers, 200 W. Jefferson St. The program celebrates African-American History month.
Many families are in some way affected by the silent epidemic of mental illness but many deny their husband, wife, child, brother or sister has a problem. African Americans are disproportionately exposed to social conditions considered to be important risk factors for mental illness. There is often a negative stigma associated with mental health treatment in African- American communities.
Bayless will illustrate how relationships, parenting and careers of African Americans are heavily impacted by psychological issues. He will provide tips on how to recognize the signs of mental or psychological distress, where to go for help and what the most effective treatments are.
The free series, a diversity education and awareness project of the city’s “We’re All On The Same Team” program, is sponsored by the Phoenix Human Relations Commission and the city’s Equal Opportunity Department. It features dynamic people telling their stories about diversity.
Bring your lunch and enjoy a cultural experience. No reservation needed. For more information, call 602-261-8242 or 602-534-1557/TTY or visit phoenix.gov/eod/bbag.html.
