Burton Barr Central Library is a finalist to become a Phoenix Point of Pride landmark. Voting is open to everyone Feb. 11 through March 20 online at phoenix.gov/pride2008 or by ballot available at all Phoenix Public Library locations. Phoenix residency is not required to vote.
The 280,000-square-foot Burton Barr Central Library, located at 1221 N. Central Ave., is the architectural jewel of the Phoenix Public Library system. Located just north of downtown, Central Library attracts more than 2,500 visitors daily. It is home to a number of unique collections, including materials about Phoenix and the state of Arizona in the Arizona Room, artist-made and fine press books as well as the Alfred Knight Rare Book Collection in the Rare Book Room and the nationally acclaimed Special Needs Center with assistive technology for people with disabilities. The Great Reading Room fills the fifth floor of the library and houses the nonfiction collection while offering spectacular views of the city.
Designed by bruderDWL architects, the building’s shape is inspired by Monument Valley, resembling a curving copper mesa split by a stainless steel canyon. A five-story atrium, the Crystal Canyon, is topped by nine skylights that track the sun. A 32-foot-high "Floating Ceiling" is suspended by cables over the Great Reading Room.
Phoenix Public Library is a system of 14 branch libraries and the Burton Barr Central Library.
