Phoenix schools that incorporate the arts into the curriculum are invited to submit entries for the second annual Mayor’s School of Excellence Award for Outstanding Achievement in Arts Education.
The program, sponsored by the city of Phoenix Mayor’s Office and Blue Cross Blue Shield® of Arizona, will recognize schools and programs that have done an outstanding job of making the arts an essential part of education in their districts.
“Research shows us that students with high levels of arts participation outperform those students who haven’t had the privilege of participating in the arts on virtually every measure,” Mayor Phil Gordon said. “Learning through the arts has significant effects on learning in other domains. In addition, in after-school programs, the arts guide youth toward positive behaviors and goals.”
To be considered for the award, a school should teach all the arts (music, visual arts, dance and theatre) and/or integrate them into other subject areas. Other criteria and entry forms can be found at phoenix.gov/arts. The deadline to submit entries is March 7.
One winning high school and one winning elementary school will receive a $1,000 cash prize each and will be considered for a John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts National Schools of Distinction in Arts Education Award.
