Public Voting to Select New Phoenix Point of Pride Begins Feb. 11

The Phoenix Pride Commission is asking the public to add another site to its Phoenix Points of Pride list.

From Feb. 11 to March 20, everyone is invited to vote for their favorite Point of Pride from among the 10 finalists recently selected from more than 60 sites that were nominated by the public in fall 2007. Online voting is at phoenix.gov/pride2008.

A Point of Pride is a landmark or attraction unique to, and located within, the city of Phoenix that evokes a sense of pride among area residents.

The 10 finalists for 2008 are ASU at the West campus, Burton Barr Central Library, George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center, Chase Field, Cesar Chavez Park, Cutler-Plotkin Jewish Heritage Center, Murphy Bridle Path, North Mountain Visitor’s Center, Pioneer Living History Museum and Royal Palms Resort and Spa.

Voting rules include:

  • Voting is open to everyone;
  • Only one location per postcard or Internet entry can be listed;
  • People may vote only one time for a location;
  • Voters must include their name, address and signature on their postcard and all information on the Internet entry for their votes to be valid.

Vote online at phoenix.gov/pride2008 or by postcard from Feb. 11 to March 20. Postcards can be mailed to City of Phoenix PIO (MC), 200 W. Washington St., 12th Floor, Phoenix, AZ 85003 and must be postmarked no later than March 20.

The Phoenix Pride Commission will tally the votes and announce the new Points of Pride site(s) in April.

“We’re excited to announce the public voting for our 10 Points of Pride finalists,” said Conchita Raices-Kollmann, chair of the Phoenix Points of Pride committee. “It was amazing to see the level of pride and passion conveyed in the nominations we received that covered more than 60 sites. Our 10 finalist sites are all significant and worthy of consideration to be added to the Phoenix Points of Pride.”

The current 30 Phoenix Points of Pride include: Arizona Biltmore Resort and Spa; Arizona Center; Ben Avery Shooting Facility; Camelback Mountain; Cricket Pavilion; Deer Valley Rock Art Center; Desert Botanical Garden; Encanto Park; Heard Museum; Herberger Theater Center; Historic Heritage Square; Japanese Friendship Garden; Mystery Castle; Orpheum Theatre; Papago Park/Hole-In-The-Rock; Thomas J.
