Heart-healthy Workshops on Stroke Awareness and Aneurysms

A series of free, monthly heart-healthy workshops for older adults and the community will be presented by the city of Phoenix Human Services Department Senior Services Division and the Arizona Heart Institute.

A workshop on stroke awareness will be presented by Lisa Gillen, NP, at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 17, at the Paradise Valley Community Center, Multipurpose Room, 17402 N. 40th St.

Widely misunderstood, strokes are the third leading cause of death in the United States with 700,000 people affected annually. Gillen, an adult nurse practitioner at the Arizona Heart Institute, will help identify the risk factors and treatments that one needs to take to fight strokes.

Another workshop on aneurysms and endoluminal grafts will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 24, at the Devonshire Community Center, 2802 E. Devonshire Ave., presented by Teresa Capriotti, clinic nurse manager, RN, at the Arizona Heart Institute.

Capriotti, with more than 20 years of experience in cardiovascular medicine, will explain the causes, symptoms and diagnosis for aneurysms, a ballooning in the wall of an artery. She also will discuss a minimally invasive procedure using an endoluminal graft that often can help repair the aneurysm.

Future presentations will include the latest advances in cardiovascular care, stress management, disease management through a cardiac conditioning program, and diet and exercise. Space is limited on a first-come, first-served basis. To RSVP, call 602-495-3785.
