Phoenix Reopens Some Pools Today; Others to Reopen Over Next Several Days

The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department reopened the following pools today at noon:

  • Alkire, 1617 W. Papago St.
  • Cortez, 3434 W. Dunlap Ave.
  • David C. Uribe, 3801 W. Cactus Rd.
  • Eastlake, 1549 E. Jefferson St.
  • Grant, 714 S. Second Ave.
  • Hermoso, 5749 S. 20th St.
  • Holiday, 4530 N. 67th Ave.
  • Marivue, 5625 W. Osborn Rd.
  • Roosevelt, 6246 S. Seventh St.
  • Starlight, 7810 W. Osborn Rd.
  • Sunnyslope, 301 W. Dunlap Rd.

The following pools will open at noon on Saturday, July 19:

  • Maryvale, 4444 N. 51st Ave.
  • Pecos, 17010 S. 48th St.
  • Telephone Pioneer, 1946 W. Morningside Dr.

As residents return to pools, the city and health officials are urging visitors with symptoms of intestinal illness to refrain from swimming for at least two weeks after symptoms have disappeared. Additional pools will open on Monday and the coming days as staff completes the process of hyperchlorination, backwashing and facility disinfection. Once these steps are completed, pools will be reopened after their chlorine levels drop back down to safe levels for swimming.

The city has established Web pages with comprehensive closure and reopening information at phoenix.gov. These Web pages will be updated continuously as reopening dates are confirmed. People also can call 602-534-SWIM to get the latest pool reopening schedule.

Prior to hyperchlorination, the city tested five pools on July 15 for the presence of cryptosporidium. Marivue Pool, 5625 W. Osborn Road, was the only pool that tested positive for the presence of cryptosporidium. Marivue Pool was retested after hyperchlorination on Wednesday, July 16, and tested negative.

Now that the pools are beginning to reopen, the city and health officials are asking visitors to meticulously follow Centers for Disease Control personal hygiene guidelines to ensure they don’t introduce illness-causing organisms into any pools:

For all swimmers:

  • Please don’t swim when you have diarrhea. You can spread germs in the water and make other people sick. This is especially important for kids in diapers. Anyone that has had symptoms of intestinal illness including diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach cramps should not swim in any pool for at least two weeks after their symptoms have disappeared.

  • Please don’t swallow the pool water. In fact, avoid getting water in your mouth.

  • Please practice good hygiene. Take a shower before swimming and wash your hands after using the toilet or changing diapers. Germs on your body end up in the water.

For Parents of Young Kids:

  • Please take your kids on bathroom breaks or check diapers often. Waiting to hear "I have to go" may mean that it’s too late.
  • Please change diapers in a bathroom or a diaper-changing area and not at poolside. Germs can spread to surfaces and objects in and around the pool and cause illness.
  • Please wash your child thoroughly (especially the rear end) with soap and water before swimming.
