“Health for a Lifetime,” a yearlong series of free workshops presented by the city of Phoenix Human Services Department Senior Services Division and St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, will present health information for older adults and the community.
The next free workshop will be “Conquering Cancer - A 21st Century Possibility,” from 12:15 to 2:15 p.m. Friday, June 20, at Desert West Community Center, 6501 W. Virginia Ave.
Dr. Joan Shapiro, from St. Joseph’s Hospital, will discuss the progress being made to conquer cancer, including what current research shows and what strides have been made in cancer prevention and control. Refreshments will be provided.
Another workshop, “Doc Speak! How to Speak with Your Doctor,” will be from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Monday, June 23, at Devonshire Community Center, 2802 E. Devonshire Ave.
Dr. Charles Daschbach, from St. Joseph’s Hospital, will review the barriers to communication between patients and physicians from the jargon of medical language to intimidation by professionals and how to overcome these gaps. A healthy snack will be provided.
Future monthly workshops will focus on nutrition, cardiac care and the latest cancer cures. The workshops are free and open to the public and support the mission of the Healthier Phoenix Initiative. For more information, call 602-534-0576.
