South Phoenix Job Fairs Help Residents Start New Careers

More than 200 south Phoenix residents participated in two Take Charge of Your Life Job Fairs on Tuesday, June 17, and today in Phoenix, looking to start new careers and build a greater sense of community in their neighborhood.

The job fairs, which were sponsored by the Phoenix Workforce Connection and the Phoenix Revitalization Corp., are part of the Take Back Your Neighborhood campaign aimed at reducing gun violence in four south Phoenix neighborhoods.

More than 20 area employers took part in the job fairs, including Wells Fargo, Arizona State University, Fox Television, MDS Pharma Services, Pepsi Bottling Group, U-Haul International, UPS, Wal-Mart Distribution and Gateway Community College.

The campaign's four neighborhoods and their boundaries are:

  • 7/11 Fight Back (7th to 15th avenues and Buckeye Road to I-17)
  • Lindo Park (19th to 23rd avenues and Roeser Road to Southern Avenue)
  • South Vista (12th to 16th streets and Roeser Road to Southern Avenue)
  • Hermoso Park (16th to 24th streets and Vineyard to Broadway roads)

The June 17 job fair was held at the Emmett McLouglin Community Training and Education Center, 1150 S. Seventh Ave., and today's was held at the Travis L. Williams Family Services Center, 4732 S. Central Ave.

The campaign is taking place throughout the month of June, with various community activities, including job fairs, a neighborhood cleanup, an anonymous gun buy-back program and a community celebration.

Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon teamed up with Phoenix City Councilmen Michael Johnson, District 8, and Michael Nowakowski, District 7, Phoenix Police Department, Neighborhood Services Department, U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, U.S. Attorney's Office in Arizona, Silent Witness and Arizonans for Gun Safety to create a program that could help curb the gun violence in the four neighborhoods.

For more information about the program, visit takebackyourneighborhood.com or call 602-222-5400.
