Today, the city of Phoenix Housing Department hosted a ceremonial groundbreaking for McCarty on Monroe, the city’s sixth senior affordable housing property.
McCarty on Monroe, located at 1130 E. Monroe St., is a redevelopment housing project that will replace 24 outdated housing units with 69 modern apartments. The property, which will provide homes for low- and very low-income seniors, is the first city-sponsored low-income housing tax credit (LIHTC) project in the downtown area.
The new gated community will have modern amenities including washer and dryer hook ups in each apartment, a community room with a kitchen, computer room and courtyard.
Originally developed by real estate broker Leon McCarty in 1963 as the McCarty Apartments, the property has a history of providing quality affordable housing for seniors, low-income and minority residents.
This project is made possible by a public/private/nonprofit partnership. City of Phoenix departments working on this project include Housing, Development Services, Engineering and Architectural Services, Finance, Law and Planning.
LIHTC funds were made possible through the Arizona Department of Housing with additional funding from city of Phoenix bond funds. Other project partners include Citicorp USA Inc., Cohen & Grisgby, P.C., CSG Advisors, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Orcutt Winslow is the project architect and the general contractor is Weitz Construction.
