DESCRIPTION:Phoenix sculptor Alan Price designed the cage and additional details for the pedestrian bridge at the intersection of Ray Road and Thunderhill Place in Ahwatukee Foothills. Known for his sculptural installations using steel wire and halogen bulbs to create environments filled with slowly changing patterns, Price designed this elegant double-helix shaped cage to convey a sense of movement.
Constructed by Stinger Welding, Inc. of box tubing and expanded metal mesh, the cage uses the sun’s rays to cast interesting shadows across the bridge deck and roadway beneath it. The imaginative environment created by the cage is intriguing from a distance and from the inside. It invites school-age children – its primary users – as they make their way across Ray Road to Kyrene Monte Vista Elementary School.
Price was selected for the project in February 2002. He developed the cage design after conducting a series of fantasy bridge-making workshops with fourth-graders at the school. Throughout the design process, Price worked closely with Erin Flinton of Al Price Studio, SVR, Inc. engineers and the Street Transportation Department on the cage, pier and railing designs. This is Price’s first public art commission.
