Phoenix Aviation Department Readies for New Security Measures

Phoenix, ARIZ. - Several new requirements of the Aviation and Transportation Security Act of 2001 enacted by Congress and signed into legislation by President George W. Bush on November 19, 2001 will be implemented this year. Phoenix Aviation Department employees are diligently working with the airlines and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport to implement the mandates. The airlines and the federal government will have responsibility for screening passengers and baggage.

Beginning Friday, January 18, 2002 airlines, under federal oversight, must screen 100% of all checked baggage using one of four federally approved methods

"We are hopeful that the airlines and federal government will work cooperatively to make these changes without adversely impacting customer service," said Aviation Director David Krietor. "However, we will be ready to assist the airlines in helping their customers should the need arise. We would ask that passengers continue to be patient as these new federal requirements are put into place.

Travelers should continue to arrive at least 90 minutes to two hours prior to departure for flights to domestic destinations and three hours early for international flights. Airlines at Sky Harbor are also asking that passengers board their flights when called to assist the companies in meeting the bag check requirements.
