Phoenix, Arizona -- A legendary Arizona leader is now helping to chart the course for Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Art Hamilton, who served in the Arizona State Legislature for 26 years, now serves as a member of the Phoenix Aviation Advisory Board. The Board provides vital input on major projects at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, and two general aviation reliever airports, Phoenix Deer Valley and Phoenix Goodyear. Mr. Hamilton is one of nine Board members, appointed by the Phoenix Mayor and City Council.
Mr. Hamilton brings an impressive leadership background to the Phoenix Aviation Advisory Board. In addition to serving more than two dozen years in the Arizona House of Representatives, Mr. Hamilton was the first African-American and only Arizonan to be elected President of the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL). He was also appointed by President Clinton to serve on the Advisory Council on Intergovernmental Relations (ACIR). He was recently honored with the Calvin C. Goode Lifetime Achievement Award, named after a longtime Phoenix city councilman. The award was given in conjunction with the Dr. Martin Luther King Day celebrations.
Mr. Hamilton was born in Phoenix, Arizona. In addition to his political career, he spent 34 years at Salt River Project, before leaving to become a partner in a Phoenix public relations firm. He is so beloved in the community, that an elementary school is named after him. The Murphy School District in Phoenix named “Arthur M. Hamilton School” in 1985.
