Sky Harbor Expects Heaviest Travel Days to be Thursday, Friday, Monday

Phoenix, Arizona – This is expected to be the busiest weekend for travel through Sky Harbor between now and Thanksgiving. On an average day there are 75,000 travelers through Sky Harbor, but on the busiest days this weekend there will be closer to 100,000. The airport is offering the following travel tips:

  • Pack all items that you must have with you in your carry-on. While it is rare, bags can be delayed or confused with a fellow traveler’s bag. Medications and irreplaceable items should be taken on the plane with you in case you are separated from your bag at your destination.
  • If you are traveling with a baby or toddler baby formula, breast milk, and juice are allowed in your carry-on baggage.
  • The TSA no longer bans common lighters in carry-on luggage as of August 4, 2007. Torch lighters remain banned in carry-ons.
  • As of August 4, 2007, laptop computers, full-size video game consoles (for example Playstation®, X-box®, or Nintendo®), full-size DVD players, and video cameras that use video cassettes must be removed from their carrying cases and submitted separately for x-ray screening. Laptop computers and video cameras that use cassettes have long been subject to this policy. Small and portable electronic items do not need to be removed from their carrying cases.
  • Call the parking hotline before leaving home at 602-273-4545. You will receive live, up-to-the-minute information and directions to the nearest available open lot. If the economy lots fill, overflow lots will be opened to serve customers.
  • If you’re carrying liquids or gels through the security checkpoint they must be in three ounce containers or less, carried in a quart-size, plastic bag. Only one plastic bag is allowed per traveler and it must be screened separately. Pack larger containers of liquids and gels in your checked luggage. Even if liquids are unopened, they cannot go through the checkpoint if in a container that holds more than 3 ounces – even if the larger bottle is almost empty.
  • You may purchase water and other beverages past the security checkpoint and carry them onto the plane.
  • For longer flights, bring a snack or a meal onto the plane. All of Sky Harbor’s restaurants offer meals to go.
  • Before leaving home, check with the airline on possible flight delays, baggage weight limits and curb-side bag check charges now applied by some airlines.

Rather than circling the terminals when picking up passengers, wait in one of Sky Harbor’s two cell phone waiting lots, called “Stage and Go.” One waiting lot is located east of Terminal 4 and the other is located west of the Terminal 2 parking structure.
