Sky Harbor Expands Busiest Security Checkpoint

Phoenix, Arizona -- Just in time for the busy spring break travel season, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has completed the expansion of its busiest security checkpoint. The “A” checkpoint on the northwest side of Terminal 4 now has eight lanes and room for one additional lane if necessary. “This newly expanded checkpoint demonstrates our commitment to security and customer service, our two top priorities at Sky Harbor,” said David Krietor, Aviation Director for the City of Phoenix.

The “A” checkpoint originally had four security lanes. In order to double the size of the checkpoint, workers had to widen a pedestrian bridge on the northwest side of Terminal 4. While the checkpoint was being renovated, Sky Harbor opened six temporary security lanes on the west side of Terminal 4. The newly-renovated eight-lane “A” checkpoint is now the largest at Sky Harbor.

“This widened security checkpoint is a welcome improvement to Sky Harbor’s busiest terminal,” said Phoenix Vice Mayor Michael Johnson. “The expansion of the “A” checkpoint is just one of the changes being made to improve the travel experience.” On March 8 an additional security checkpoint will open in Terminal 4, along with a new concourse providing eight new gates for Southwest Airlines. Sky Harbor is also opening more than 16 new shops and restaurants this spring in Terminal 4.
