Sky Harbor Has 9 Straight Months of Record Passenger Traffic
Phoenix, Arizona -- September passengers numbers at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport were up nearly ten percent over the same month last year, making September the ninth straight month of record high passenger traffic at Sky Harbor. Three million travelers passed through Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in September 2004, compared to just over 2.7 million in September 2003. The statistics do not come as a surprise to David Cavazos, Acting Aviation Director for the City of Phoenix. “Sky Harbor is one of the fastest growing major hub airports in the world,” said Cavazos. “The growth is good news for the entire Phoenix area. The economic impact of Sky Harbor is now more than $26 billion a year.”
In 2003, Sky Harbor saw a record 37 million passengers. This year, the airport is on track to break that record. July 2004 was the busiest single month ever at Sky Harbor, with nearly 3.6 million travelers.
To accommodate the increase in passengers, Sky Harbor is in the midst of several projects including a new concourse providing eight new gates for Southwest Airlines, dozens of new shops in Terminal 4, a new air traffic control tower and a brand new Rental Car Center.
