Mountain View Community Center

People of all ages can enjoy one of the finest facilities that the city of Phoenix has to offer the Mountain View Community Center (MVCC). Because of its beauty and uniqueness, it is often mistaken for a private club, but it is a recreation center run by the Parks, Recreation and Library Department.

Amenities

Racquetball courts

Racquetball - The facility boasts four indoor, air-conditioned racquetball courts kept in excellent condition. Court 1 can be converted into an indoor volleyball court called walleyball. Notify staff first if you are interested in using it for this purpose. Courts rent at $5 an hour and can be reserved for two hours up to twenty-four hours in advance.

Fitness Center

Fitness Center - The fitness center is equipped with a complete Nautilus system, two stationary bikes, a treadmill and a separate free-weights room. A weight room monitor is available to help you set-up a workout program, show you the proper use of equipment and answer any fitness related questions you might have.

Indoor Theater - Enjoy viewing current movies on videocassette, DVD or cable. Our theater seats 40 people in air-conditioned cushioned comfort. The theater can be rented for presentations, meetings or private viewing. Call the center for costs and availability.

Pre-Teen Room

Pre-Teen Room -Programs in this room are designed for youths ages 10 to 13. Because this is a transitional age group, it helps them move into the teenage years. The room includes billiards, foosball, Ping-Pong, air hockey, cable TV and Nintendo 64. The room is comfortably furnished with couches and has game tables available for play.

More Recreation Facilities

Along with Mountain View Community Center, the Parks and Recreation Department operates three other facilities in the same complex.

Mountain View Tennis Center

Mountain View Tennis Center -This facility has 24 public tennis courts with a tennis professional on staff to give lessons. State and national tournaments are held at the center. For more information, please call the department's Special Operations division at (602) 788-6088.

Mountain View Pool

Mountain View Pool - The pool is open during summer for swimming lessons and general swim and is a site for swim meets and competition. For more information, please call the department's Aquatics section (602) 534-1347.

Thunderbird Teen Center

Thunderbird Teen Center - Unique in appearance and in programs offered, the center has a recording studio, computers, break dance team, hip hop dance team, and much more. For more information, please call the At Risk Youth division (602) 495-7323.

Multi-Generational Activities

Outdoor basketball court

Mountain View Community Center operates as a multi-generational center offering a variety or programs, classes and activities for youths to seniors. For youths, our goal is to keep kids out of gangs, off the streets, and out of trouble with positive recreational alternatives.

Youth and Child Programs

Teens-In-Training - This is the center's core group. The teen members have weekly meetings and make many of the decisions that affect all of the youths at the center. Members are also expected to perform community service work.

Hoofers Dance Troupe - Youths are introduced to the fascinating world of tap dancing. They learn the techniques of great hoofers like the Nicholas Brothers, Sammy Davis Jr., Sam Webber and Gregory Hines.

Phoenix Afterschool Center (PAC) - This after-school program is free to youths ages 8 to12 and offers a variety of activities. Children are supervised and must sign in when entering the program, and sign out when leaving. Only authorized adults are allowed to pick-up or remove a child from the program.

Adult Programs

Fitness Center - MVCC has a well-equipped fitness center with a complete Nautilus System, two lifecycles, a treadmill and a free weights section.

Aerobics - Cardio-Combo, Jazz, Low Inpact and Total Body Conditioning Aerobics classes. The classes build up your stamina, take off excess weight and tone up your muscles.

Yoga - Develop flexibility, increase strength, firm, tone and stretch the body. A regular yoga practice gives an overall sense of well being.

Seniors

Enjoy great activities while meeting new friends at weekly movies, potluck lunches, tournaments, walking club, aerobics, and racquetball. There are some special activities that require a small fee such as bingo, field trips, continental breakfasts and using the weight room.

Annual Events

Martin Luther King Celebration

This cultural awareness celebration includes a video about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life accomplishments. A short discussion follows about civil rights and the changes that have taken place since his death. Participants can enjoy food and learn to make a small plaque commemorating the memory of Dr. King.

Mountain View Community Center and Community Park

Family Picnic and Fun Day

Twice a year in March and October we plan a day of fun for the families in our community. The fun usually involves softball, horseshoes and Frisbee throwing. Families bring their own picnic lunch and MVCC supplies all of the game equipment. Each member that participates receives a raffle ticket for prizes. MVCC also supplies snacks and punch for this free event.

Spring Extravaganza and Egg Hunt

MVCC along with Mountain View Association and STMicroelectronics hosts a free Spring Extravaganza. There are egg hunts according to ages, large bounce games, candy, goody baskets are raffled off, face painting, crafts and each child who participates gets to take a picture with the Bunny. Even tiny tots can enjoy a day of fun.

Cinco de Mayo

The history and cultural behind this Mexican holiday is celebrated with Mexican dancers, guitar players and singers. Games are played and there are two candy-filled piņatas for the kids to swat. Everyone at this free event gets to sample a variety of Mexican foods.

Juneteenth Celebration

A celebration of freedom from slavery. Participants can learn about the emancipation of slaves by President Abraham Lincoln. Everyone is served samples of some of the best soul food around. This event is free to all.

Pre-teen Issues Workshops

Three times a year, MVCC hosts workshops designed to discuss problems confronting today's youth. Some issues covered are peer pressure, self-esteem, drugs, gangs, friendships, honesty, and fear. The workshops target youths 8 to 12 years old. Please call (602) 534-2500 for questions about participating in these sessions.

Fall Festival

MVCC along with Mountain View Association and STMicroelectronics sponsors an annual Fall Festival with face painting, a pumpkin patch, a fun house and a preteen dance. The theme of the pumpkin patch is "play and win candy". The theme of the fun house is "if you dare we will scare". The costume-only dance for is for youths ages 8 to 12. This event has been a huge success. Bring your kids to a safe place to trick-or-treat.

Holiday Food Drive

For the winter holidays, MVCC, Mountain View Association, STMicroelectronics and Echo Mountain Elementary School team up to help some of the community's needy families. The group supplies complete dinners with all the trimmings to as many families as possible. If you would like to be a part of this service please call (602) 534-2500. We need food and volunteers.

Party with Santa

"Tis the season to be jolly". Ole Saint Nick is here and anxious to find out the gift wishes of the little kiddies. Santa will be handing out candy and posing with each child who visits him. MVCC and Mountain View Association will supply the hot chocolate, apple cider and cookies. Why sit in the long lines of busy shoppers at the malls when you can enjoy the pleasant experience of Mountain View Community Center.
