Pima Canyon Parking Information

At over 16,000 acres the South Mountain Park Preserve offers a wide range of recreational opportunities for a variety of interests and abilities. Users of the Pima Canyon area will find newly redesigned parking spaces. This redesign is part of the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department’s ongoing efforts to work with active citizens to maintain a balance between recreational use and protection of the land.

Pima Canyon continues to grow in popularity. Competition for parking spots grew along with the crowds, often pushing people to park in dirt areas. Parking off road is illegal and also has resulted in slow erosion of the preserve (the photo at right demonstrates the impact off-road parking has had in Pima Canyon). As stewards of the mountain preserves we realized the need to control illegal parking to prevent further damage to the preserve.

We also needed to redesign parking at Pima Canyon because the haphazard parking presented safety issues for people entering and leaving their vehicles and was a potential impediment to emergency vehicles entering the area. Off-road parking also was a potential violation of county dust-control measures. Working with engineers in the Streets Department, we created 150 marked parking spaces on the north side of the road.
We’re hopeful that this redesign will provide safety and long-term protection of the fragile desert.

Car pooling is always appreciated and other trailhead parking is offered at Beverly Canyon Trailhead (46th Street south of Baseline) with 30 spaces and an additional 100 spaces on a privately owned parking lot just to the north.  Furthermore, over 1000 parking spaces are located at the main park entrance at Central Avenue and Dobbins.
