Pollution Prevention, Planning and Research (P3R)

The Pollution Prevention, Planning and Research (P3R) Program conducts an educational/outreach point source control program to reduce toxicity to the Wastewater Treatment Plants by educating industry and the public about the impacts than can result when oil, antifreeze, pesticides, herbicides, paints, solvents or other potentially harmful chemicals are dumped into drains.

Materials such as brochures, flyers, posters, P2 promotional items, and graphics are used to support the educational/outreach program. The P2 games and materials are taken to environmental conferences, trade shows, various community events, and public schools where P2 information is distributed and visitors can have their P2 knowledge tested.

Contact Out-of-Class Environmental Quality Specialist Marji Dukowitz at (602) 534-2085 or at marji.dukowitz@phoenix.gov.

Best Management Practices

The P2 program implements Best Management Practices (BMPs) at selected industrial and commercial facilities to reduce the volume and concentration of pollutants discharged into the Wastewater Treatment Plants and ultimately into the Salt River. This is also accomplished in part by the Industrial Pretreatment Program issuing Class “B” permits for Zero Categorical Dischargers, High Strength Dischargers, Groundwater Remediation Discharges and Best Management Practice Permits.
