Help put the 'DiamondBack' into your neighborhood

It's time again to check out your property to make sure you're doing your part to keep your neighborhood looking sharp.

The call comes from the Neighborhood Services Department, which has launched its sixth annual "Help Put the DiamondBack into Your Neighborhood: Keep it Clean" education campaign.

If one or two families take an interest in maintaining their property, it becomes contagious and spreads throughout the neighborhood.

The awareness campaign, a joint effort with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Arizona Public Service and Prensa Hispana, suggests paying special attention to eight key areas - properly disposing of trash, parking in designated areas, removing inoperable vehicles, maintaining fences, maintaining vegetation, securing vacant buildings, eliminating graffiti and removing visible outside storage.

Kids can earn ticket to ballgame

The popular "Extra! Extra! Read Your Way to the Ballpark" summer reading program is back.

Sponsored by the Arizona Diamondbacks and The Arizona Republic, the program May 27 through July 26 features a reading game, prizes, special events and an opportunity for young people to win a ticket to a baseball game.

The Phoenix Public Library and 10 other library systems in Maricopa County are participating in the program, which last year drew 90,000 youngsters, a 17 percent increase from the previous year.

By reading or listening to a book for 50 pages or 20 minutes, participants advance on a game board and earn prizes along the way. Those who reach the finish line earn a bonus prize - a ticket to a Diamondbacks game. Game boards are available at all Phoenix libraries and online at summerreading.azcentral.com.

For more information, call 602-262-4636 or visit phoenixpubliclibrary.org.

New freeway exit aids transfer station

Getting to the North Gateway Transfer Station just got a little easier.

A new exit off Interstate 17 now is open at Dixileta Drive, cutting the distance northbound motorists have to travel on the service road before reaching the transfer station.

Previously, access to the facility required customers to exit the freeway at Happy Valley Road, then travel three miles north on the frontage road. The new Dixileta exit reduces the travel distance on the service road to less than one-half mile.

Meanwhile, the North Gateway facility and the 27th Avenue Transfer Station at 27th Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road now are operating under weekend summer hours of 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. North Gateway is open Saturdays and Sundays, while 27th Avenue is open on Saturdays, but closed on Sundays. Weekday hours remain unchanged at both facilities: 5:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

For trash disposal facility information, call 602-262-7251 or visit phoenix.gov/publicworks.

Hazardous waste collection planned

Phoenix residents can dispose of common hazardous wastes and other items at a Household Hazardous Waste collection from 7 a.m. to noon June 12 to 14 at Desert West Sports Complex, 6602 W. Encanto Blvd.

It will be the final collection until September when the event will be held 7 a.m. to noon Sept. 18 to 20 at Cesar Chavez Park, 7858 S. 35th Ave.

In addition to batteries, oil, paint, antifreeze, pesticides and pool chemicals, the events will accept five road tires per household, computers and household appliances that use refrigerants, including refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and heat pumps. Commercial loads will not be accepted.

The city also will pick up household appliances at your home for a fee. Call for a collection appointment.
