Highlighted Employee

Officer of the Month
January 2008
Arnold Serrano #8061

Officer Serrano has been the School Resource Officer at Camelback High School for the past two years.  He has developed a great rapport with the students and staff.  On December 19, 2007, he was contacted by three female students who advised him they needed to speak with him about a serious issue.  One female student, fourteen years old, began to speak to him and the other two were there for mere support.  The female student advised Officer Serrano she had been sexually molested by her stepfather, thirty two years old, for the past several years.  He showed a great deal of compassion and understanding when dealing with this personal issue.  He took this matter very serious and immediately contacted Child Help, spoke with a sergeant and advised him of the situation.  The sergeant requested Officer Serrano transport the child to their facility.

Upon Officer Serrano's arrival at Child Help, he briefed the sergeant and detectives who would be assuming the investigation on the circumstances surrounding the incident, as he knew them.  The detectives did a through interview with the child and learned this sexual abuse had been ongoing for the past several years.  A confrontation call was completed and the suspect admitted to having a sexual relationship with child on numerous occasions.  Officers from the Cactus Park Precinct went to the suspect"s residence to arrest him.  He fought with the officers but was taken into custody without further incident.  The suspect was then interviewed by detectives admitted to his involvement with the child.  On December 19, 2007, he was booked into Madison Street Jail on three counts of sexual conduct with a minor (C2F), four counts of sexual abuse to a minor (C3F), and one count of sexual molestation (C2F).  The suspect remains at Madison Jail with no bond.

Officer Serrano went above and beyond his job duties.  He took a personal interest in this incident due to the fact that it involved a child.  He was instrumental in contacting Child Help, transporting the child to the facility for a detailed interview.  Officer Serrano clearly upheld the Phoenix Police Department’s Guiding Value of Dedication to Duty and Employee Excellence.  I commend Officer Serrano for his dedication to duty.

School Resource Officer becomes Chef for a Day at Local School.

On Friday, April 11, 2008, Officer Greg Myracle, School Resource Officer at R. E. Simpson School, took off his gun belt and flipped burgers for the End of AIMS testing celebration. The celebration was during the students' lunchtime and they were able to enjoy a barbeque. Officer Myracle cooked over 1,120 burgers for students and staff. This was an excellent way for the students to see Officer Myracle in another positive light, outside of his role as an SRO at their school. The students and staff had a great time and enjoyed the food. Thanks to Officer Myracle for being Simpson's chef for the day.
