On January 2, 2010, at 11:30 p.m., 33-year-old Sharetta Newton was walking westbound in the bike lane on near 49th Street and Camelback Road when she was struck and seriously injured by a black SUV. The vehicle, possibly an Escalade, Ford Excursion, or Ford Explorer was traveling in the same direction on Camelback and witnesses watched as it fled the scene. The vehicle’s passenger side mirror was torn off during the collision and it is possible there is damage to the passenger’s side of the vehicle. One witness reported the license plate may have been white in color, possibly a U of A collegiate plate with the number 4 or 6 in the combination. The vehicle was last seen westbound on Camelback Road.
