Traffic Support Unit
Information Provided by the Police Department

This unit is responsible for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) Enforcement programs, the Youth Alcohol Squad, the citywide DUI Van program, the Commercial Vehicle Inspection (CVI) Programs, city-wide Abandoned Vehicle Removal Program.

The unit has one CVI squad, two DUI Enforcement Squads, and one Youth Alcohol Squad.

The CVI squad conducts inspections of commercial vehicles to ensure compliance with applicable city ordinances, state laws, and federal regulations. Squad members also provide training and informational support to operators and owners of commercial vehicles through seminars, truck rodeos, etc.

DUI Enforcement Squads specialize in the arrest and processing of alcohol and/or drug impaired drivers.DUI Van They also operate six DUI mobile processing vans that support patrol officers, as well as other members of the Traffic Bureau.

The Youth Alcohol Squad provides alcohol awareness classes and workshops to the youth of the community through partnerships with educational institutions. They also support the efforts of organizations such as Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD), and Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD). The squad also conducts enforcement programs aimed at businesses and establishments that sell alcohol to minors.

Motorcycles lined up

Finally, the Traffic Support Unit and other units provide traffic control for a myriad of special events citywide, including parades, marches, and races, (run/walk/skate). Unit members also participated in funeral processions for members of the law enforcement community and motorcades for dignitaries.

The Unit is responsible for, and conducts, all basic and in-service solo motorcycle officer training for Phoenix officers as well as officers from throughout the state, on request.
