During Phase 1, the public had numerous opportunities to participate in the planning process. Initially, the consultant interviewed 20 representatives of recreation, homeowner, and special interest groups for their opinion on the types of recreation uses and facilities desired for this area. Two public open houses were held, and more than 150 people attended the first one in December 2000. At the second one in March 2001, information was presented about the natural and built features and the recreational opportunities and constraints of the area. More than 225 people attended.
Notices for the open houses were mailed to approximately 7,500 households in the vicinity and announcements were placed in the newspaper. A recreation survey was distributed at the December meeting and approximately 160 surveys with comments and suggestions were returned. The City Parks and Recreation Board received two presentations from City staff.
