HANDS-ON HERITAGE HOUSE--  Come join fun historical hands-on activities and exhibits inside the California bungalow style Stevens-Haustgen House. Look through a stereoscope, try your hand at old fashioned games, investigate the tools of kitchen and laundry duties over 100 years ago and more. This participatory exhibit space is also the headquarters of our scheduled school tours and Heritage Saturday activities. The Hands-On Heritage House, (602)534-9382, is open Wednesday - Saturday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Sunday Noon – 4 p.m. Closed Easter Sunday. GATEWAY TO GREEN PHOENIX: A COMMUNITY CELEBRATION--  Show off your green pride by attending this FREE neighborhood fair at Civic Space Park's Historic A.E. England Building, 424 N. Central Ave. 4-6 p.m.  Learn how you can make your home and neighborhood more sustainable; featuring displays by city departments.  Appearances by the Mayor, City Council members and entertainment. ARCHAEOLOGY FOR KIDS--  Become a Junior Archaeologist! Learn about the science of archaeology and the Hohokam people by participating in a simulated excavation of a Hohokam pithouse. Actual Hohokam artifacts are used in this program. Classes are generally October - May, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., and are divided by age (ages 7-11 first Saturday, 10-14 third Saturday). Advance registration required. Specially arranged workshops are available for groups of ten or more. VETERANS DAY GOURD DANCE AND COMMUNITY POTLUCK--  The public is invited to attend the annual Veterans Day Gourd Dance and Potluck at Pueblo Grande Museum on November 11, 2009 from 11am to 4pm.  Join us to honor the memory of all Veterans who served our nation.  Gourd Dancing starts at 11:30am.  Event is free and open to everyone.  Bring your favorite potluck dish to share.  No advanced registration required. 2009 PHOENIX SUMMIT CHALLENGE--  The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department is proud to present an opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts of all abilities to climb multiple summits throughout the Phoenix Desert Parks and Preserves. SUNNYSLOPE COMMUNITY FAIRE DAY--  This annual fall festival will feature businesses and organizations in Sunnyslope.  Beginning at 10 a.m. and running until 2 p.m., visitors can hop on the free Circulator Bus that runs through Sunnyslope and enjoy the day’s activities. Stop at the Sunnyslope Community Center to enjoy free games, face painting and entertainment in the main building; also class demonstrations, basketball and soccer activities in the gym. EXPANDED SILENT SUNDAYS TO NORTH MOUNTAIN PARK-- Cyclists, skateboarders, wheelchair users and stroller-riding tots will soon get to call the roads of North Mountain Park their own one day each month when the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department expands it’s popular Silent Sunday event to the area beginning in February.  North Mountain Park, 10600 N. 7th Street, will host Silent Sundays from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. on the second Sunday of each month. Vehicles will park in the lot at the Havasupai Ramada reserving the park’s roadways for non-motorized use. Trailhead access sites outside of the park will remain open to vehicles. The kickoff event is Feb. 8 with the remaining 2009 dates: May 10, June 14, July 12, Aug. 9, Sept. 13, Oct. 11, Nov. 8, and Dec. 13. For more information call (602) 495-5506.

GOURD RATTLE WORKSHOP #60667--  Join Native American artist David Morris in a Gourd Rattle Workshop.  Participants will learn how to make a gourd rattle and decorate the rattle with traditional designs.  All supplies will be provided.  Advance registration is required using class number. 1-4 p.m. Age: 18+, Cost: $45. DAY OF THANKS-- at Longview Neighborhood Recreation Center, 4040 North 14th St., from 5:30–7:30 p.m., allows the neighborhood community to come together to celebrate a Thanksgiving Dinner with traditional seasonal foods.  The holiday family dining event includes more than 200 families from the neighborhood for each event to enjoy one another’s company and friendship at the Center.  For more information call 602-534-6570.

4TH ANNUAL NAVAJO ART & RUG AUCTION-- Pueblo Grande Museum will be hosting an art auction and rug preview on Friday, at 7 p.m. featuring Auctioneers Bruce Burnham, owner of the Burnham Trading Post in Sanders, Arizona and trader Hank Blair.  Over the years as an Indian Trader Mr. Burnham has gained recognition for his dedication to the Navajo people and their art and is often called upon to lecture on Navajo culture and their arts and crafts.  He and his family are organizing the art and rug auction and have brought in exquisite examples of Native American art.  The Navajo Rug Auction will begin at 10 a.m. with a preview and bidding will begin at 12 noon.  A portion of the proceeds from the auctions will go to benefit the Pueblo Grande Museum and Auxiliary.  The auction will be a wonderful event with free museum admission, beautiful art and rugs and frybread on Saturday.  Come and enjoy the sites and sounds and have a traditional Native American frybread taco! PHOENIX PARKS COMMUNITY CENTERS OPEN HOUSES--      The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department invites you to attend free open houses at full-service community and recreation centers starting at 10 a.m. If you don’t already have a membership, the open houses give you a chance to use the centers for a day for free. Try out fitness rooms, enjoy open gym and game rooms and meet some class instructors for upcoming winter session classes, which run from December through February. You also can register in-person for winter session classes. Winter session registration opens at 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 14. Residents can register online in the Classes and Programs link of the department website or you can register in person at any community or recreation center with Saturday operating hours.  Participating centers include Beuf, Deer Valley, Desert West, Eastlake, Longview Neighborhood, Maryvale, Mountain View, Paradise Valley, Pecos, South Mountain, Sunnyslope, and Washington Activity. PIONEER CEMETERY & MILITARY MEMORIAL PARK OPEN HOUSE--  Please join us between 11 a.m. & 3 p.m. for a free open house.  Receive a booklet and take a self guided tour through any of the seven contiguous cemeteries comprising 11 acres. Volunteers will be available throughout the grounds and the beautiful, historic 1897 Smurthwaite House to answer questions and point the way. These cemeteries opened in 1884 and were in use for only 30 years, until they were closed to burials in 1914. Many prominent pioneers including Jacob Walz, the Dutchman of Superstition Mountain fame, and those who formed the government were buried here along side the common settlers, farmers, miners, shopkeepers, etc, who worked so hard to make this desert a livable home for the rest of us. “DRAWN” GALLERY  EXHIBITION--  Free. Photographers draw with light, fiber artists construct lines with needle and thread, and illustrators design with computer software.  The fundamental building blocks of LINE and Shape can become edgy and exciting elements of contemporary art.  Drawn situates the medium of drawing within a progressive context, asserting that drawing extends beyond traditional works on paper, including experimental and cross-disciplinary art.  All ages.
