HERITAGE SATURDAYS-- Did you know that Sea Shells were used in a wide variety of crafts and artwork during the Victorian Era! Its True! These precious objects were very popular items for women and children to use in creating a large array of decorative items that would be placed in and around the Victorian home. Join us in making your own seashell art and learn more about Sea Shell art in the 19th Century!  Bring the whole family for free hands-on activities and crafts 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. on the first Saturday of the month at the Hand on Heritage House at historic Heritage Square, 7th St. and Monroe.  For more information call (602) 262-5071.

PHOENIX CHILDREN'S CHORUS--  will be holding auditions for boys and girls who love to sing, 2nd through 12th grade. No previous choral experience is needed.  This award winning chorus has performed throughout Europe and Russia and taken top honors at the World Choral Olympics.  To schedule an audition please call (602) 534-3788 or visit our web site at www.phoenixchildrenschorus .org to complete an online application.   Auditions will be held at the Phoenix Center for the Arts, 1202 N. 3rd St. on May 3 from 9 a.m. to 4p.m., and May 20 at 6 p.m.

PEOPLE POPS CONCERT SERIES: A NIGHT IN THE TROPICS--  As the weather heats up across the Valley in early May, join The Phoenix Symphony as they head south for cool evening breezes in “A Night in the Tropics.” Hear selections from celebrated musicals such as South Pacific alongside classics such as George Gershwin’s spicy Cuban Overture. And the afternoon would not be complete without musical selections from your favorite movies including Pirates of the Caribbean. Resident Conductor Lawrence Golan conducts this afternoon of steamy music from the Tropics.  3 p.m.   Phoenix Symphony Hall, 225 East Adams Street. DEMO DAY & BLOWOUT TENT SALE AT CAVE CREEK GOLF COURSE--  Golfers of all ages will enjoy Demo Day, a great way to preview the latest and greatest in golf equipment as well as have the opportunity to talk directly with the manufacturers’ representatives.  It offers golfers the opportunity to “try before they buy.” The Tent Sale will offer amazing savings on all things golf – bags, clubs, shoes, gloves and clothes.  Don’t be surprised to see products from Wilson, Magique, Sun Mountain and more. Inventory from all seven pro shops will be on sale and with Papago Golf Course temporarily closed for renovation; the remainder of their inventory will be sold at huge discounts. For golfers with disabilities or the loss of mobility, a SoloRider golf cart will be on display.   This specially designed cart allows those golfers who have not been able to play because of a disability or mobility impairment, to once again enjoy the game.  The department’s golf professionals will be at the driving range offering free 10-minute tune ups for folks looking to improve their swing.  Drawings for great prizes will be held throughout the day. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cave Creek Golf Course is located at 15202 N. 19th Ave. (just north of Thunderbird Road).  For additional information call 602-262-5088.

CONCERT IN THE PARK: JACOB KELLER DUET--  Jazz Pianist & vocalist will kick off the concerts at Steele Indian School Park. PRESERVING YOUR FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHS AND DOCUMENTS MUSEUM STYLE--  Have you ever wondered how museums preserve photos and documents? In our one day workshop, “Preserving Your Family Photographs and Documents” you will learn how to care for and conserve your family photos and documents for future generations!  This one-day workshop by professional conservator Steve Hoza will concentrate on how family photographs and paper documents should be handled and stored in order to preserve them for future generations. 50/60 EVENT AT AGUILA GOLF COURSE--  Format: Entry is open to amateur golfers with a current USGA handicap. Play is gross and net in age groups (50-59 & 60+). Players can only win one way. PLAYERS MUST BE WITHIN THE REQUIRED AGE GROUP ON THE DATE OF PLAY. Be prepared to show proof of age and handicap. $10 OPTIONAL GROSS & NET SKINS (players are entered in both only) per age group. Age group 50-59 will play from the BLUE tees (approx. 6800 yards). Age group 60+ will play from WHITE tees (approx. 6400 yards). Tee times will begin at 8 am and will be posted at the above websites by Thursday, May 24th or by calling Aguila Golf Shop at 1-866-865-4653. Golf carts available @ $11 / rider. Entry fee: $47 includes green fee, range, prize pool & CTP’s. Entries close on Sunday 5/18 @ 6 p.m. Tournament information sheet and entry blank. “SILENT SUNDAY” AT SOUTH MOUNTAIN PARK/PRESERVE-- For each Silent Sunday, the park’s main Central Avenue access roadways will be closed to motor vehicles from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., reserving them for the entire day for non-motorized uses. Each Silent Sunday also features free drop-in park ranger guided interpretive programs and hikes from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the South Mountain Environmental Education Center, located adjacent to the park’s main entrance. All roads past the main gatehouse at the Central Avenue entrance, including the Summit Road, are closed to motor vehicles for the day. Visitors can park in the free public lot adjacent to the Environmental Education Center. Only roadways accessible from the preserve’s Central Avenue entrance are closed for Silent Sundays. All other access points and parking areas, including trailheads at Pima Canyon, Desert Foothills, Beverly Canyon, and the Mormon Trail, will remain open. PHOENIX PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT TO HOST MEMORIAL DAY CELEBRATION--  the Pioneers’ Cemetery Association will be honoring those who have died in the service of their country at a ceremony at 9:30 a.m. at the city’s Pioneer & Military Memorial Park.  The public is invited to wear their vintage clothing and join representatives from many of the valley’s historic societies who will be in period attire.  After the ceremony, tour the 107 year-old Smurthwaite House and the seven historic Phoenix cemeteries that make up the park.  The cemeteries date back to 1884 and contain the burial sites of some of Arizona’s most notable figures including:  John T. Alsap, Phoenix’s first mayor and Maricopa County’s first probate judge and Jacob Walz, the “Lost Dutchman” of Arizona folklore. There will be fun historical activities for children and refreshments.  Pioneer & Military Memorial Park, located at 14th Avenue and Jefferson Street, has been accepted to the National Register of Historic Places, the Nation's official list of cultural resources worthy of preservation. PUEBLO GRANDE MUSEUM IS LOOKING FOR A FEW GOOD VOLUNTEERS--  The museum uses volunteers in a number of positions: tour guide or Docent, Gift Shop attendant, Collections Aide, Library Aide and Exhibits Aide.  Depending on what you are interested in you can work with the artifacts, rare books and archival materials, see the children’s faces light up during a tour at the information you provide, work at special events such as our Farmers Market or Indian Market or you can lend your construction expertise to our Exhibits department. ANNUAL ARTE LATINO EN LA CIUDAD FINE ART SHOW--  the Phoenix Center for the Arts will feature original two and three dimensional artwork from Arizona’s Latino artists that reflects their personal interpretation of identity, diversity and community.  A free opening night reception will be held the evening of the First Friday Art Tour, May 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. featuring light refreshments and live entertainment. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday (by appointment only) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  The center is located at 214 E. Moreland, south of McDowell Road.
