First Saturday Monthly
HERITAGE SATURDAYS--  Make and take vintage crafts.  Bring the whole family to the Carriage House at Historic Heritage Square, 7th St. and Monroe (1 block. South of Van Buren in downtown Phoenix). HANDS-ON HERITAGE HOUSE-- Come join fun historical hands-on activities and exhibits inside the California bungalow style Stevens-Haustgen House. Look through a stereoscope, try your hand at old fashioned games, and investigate the tools of kitchen and laundry duties over 100 years ago and more. KIDS PLAY FREE AT CITY 9-HOLES THIS SUMMER--  Junior golfers ages 17 and under will play for FREE -- every day, all day -- at any of the three Phoenix nine-hole courses this summer, when accompanied by a paid adult. The program is designed to encourage families to enjoy golf together and to promote junior golf in Phoenix.  The special is good for one youth per adult. If only one adult is present, additional kids’ rounds are only $5 each. This program is an extension of the Phoenix Youth Golf Program that offers affordable golf lessons year-round to young golfers between the ages of 5 and 17 and the $30 Junior Play Pass good for 30 days at all Phoenix golf courses on a space available basis. Monday thru Friday, June 1 thru July 24--
PECOS TEEN VOLUNTEER PROGRAM #57938-Opportunity for teens, ages 13-18, to be part of a summer recreation program and learn skills that will assist them in future jobs and public service areas. Teens will assist in activity implementation of summer general recreation program for those 6-12 years old at the Pecos Community Center. 7:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. Teens must be at least 13 years old at start of program. $10 cost covers two program shirts and ID badge. Also, a volunteer application will need to be completed after registration. Pick up application at the front desk at Pecos Community Center. WACEE PRE-TEEN AND TEEN PROGRAM--  10-15 year olds can hang out, play foosball, billiards, basketball, softball, Play Station, and computer games, field trips, "walk-n-shops." DEVONSHIRE DANCES.  Get into the swing every Wednesday at Devonshire Senior Center from 1-3:30 p.m.  2802 E Devonshire St.   Fun for singles and couples of the senior population.  Listen and dance to the tunes of the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s provided by various local musicians. NIGHT CRITTER EXPLORATION - FAMILY SUNSET/MOON HIKE #52669--  Join park rangers for an indoor exploration of desert critters that become active mostly at night! The exploring will continue outdoors during a short hike to look and listen for these fascinating night critters. The hike will be 1 - 2 miles on rocky and rolling terrain, beginning at sunset, and ending under the light of the almost full moon. 6:30-9 p.m. Front Doors - North Mountain Visitors Center, 12950 N. 7th St., 602 495-5520. LIGHT UP THE SKY--  Each year the city hosts a free community Independence Day celebration “Light up the Sky.”  The celebration has been going on for over 20 years. We have conducted the event at Maryvale Baseball Stadium for the past 6 years impacting over 80,000 community residents annually.  This year’s event, scheduled from 7-9 p.m., will again be an opportunity for family and friends to gather at the park, meet their neighbors and celebrate, as a community, the true spirit of the holiday.  The highlight of the program is of course the outstanding display of fireworks that concludes the event.  For more information call  (602) 262-5051 or via email at jermel.stevenson@phoenix.gov.

2ND ANNUAL FREEDOM WIRELESS FABULOUS PHOENIX FOURTH—  Help celebrate our country’s freedom once again at Steele Indian School Park, 3rd Street and Indian School Rd.  The fun will begin at 6 p.m. with an expanded fireworks display beginning at 9:20 p.m. There will be two stages of entertainment, Kids World area, Classic Car exhibit, refreshment vendors, and more! ARCHAEOLOGY FOR KIDS--  Become a Junior Archaeologist! Learn about the science of archaeology and the Hohokam people by participating in a simulated excavation of a Hohokam pithouse. 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., and are divided by age (ages 7-11 first Saturday, 10-14 third Saturday). Advance registration required. Specially arranged workshops are available for groups of ten or more. SHEMER ART CENTER AND MUSEUM’S STUDENT BIENNIAL EXHIBITION--  The Shemer Art Center and Museum, along with the Phoenix Center for the Performing Arts, will feature the works of talented students and instructors this summer. EXPANDED SILENT SUNDAYS TO NORTH MOUNTAIN PARK-- Cyclists, skateboarders, wheelchair users and stroller-riding tots will soon get to call the roads of North Mountain Park their own one day each month when the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department expands it’s popular Silent Sunday event to the area beginning in February.  North Mountain Park, 10600 N. 7th Street, will host Silent Sundays from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. on the second Sunday of each month. Vehicles will park in the lot at the Havasupai Ramada reserving the park’s roadways for non-motorized use. Trailhead access sites outside of the park will remain open to vehicles. The kickoff event is Feb. 8 with the remaining 2009 dates: May 10, June 14, July 12, Aug. 9, Sept. 13, Oct. 11, Nov. 8, and Dec. 13. For more information call (602) 495-5506.

PHOENIX CHILDREN’S CHORUS TO HOLD AUDITIONS FOR UPCOMING SEASON--   The final auditions for fall 2009-2010 season will be held for boys and girls, first through 12th grades at the Phoenix Center for the Arts, 1202 N. Third St, at 6 p.m. No prior choral training is required – applicants need only possess a clear, pleasant singing voice and the desire to learn.  The choir has over 200 children in two training choirs & two touring choirs.  We are a culturally diverse chorus that offers young people a comprehensive choral music education with performance opportunities in a positive learning environment. EIGHTH ANNUAL “BACK TO SCHOOL AND HEALTH FAIR— The fair, sponsored by the City of Phoenix will be held at North High School, 1101 E Thomas Rd., from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thanks to numerous sponsors, visitors to the Back-to-School and Health Fair can get free immunizations, physical and dental check-ups, and free backpacks for the first 1,000 participants.  Fair participants will be able to gather information from more than 40 informational booths on topics ranging from school programming, domestic violence, education, finance, immigration, nutrition, and water safety. The Phoenix Suns also will be on hand with activities and kids’ games. A panel discussion about challenges affecting the surrounding community will cap off the event. Our generous sponsors include APS, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Bank of America, Phoenix 11, Phoenix Union High School District, Telemundo, Univision Radios, Latino Vibe radio, La Prensa, La Voz, 12 News, and Water Mill Express. CAMP COLLEY FAMILY HORSES TRIP #57887--  The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department is offering a family camping trip to Camp Colley, the department's outdoor adventure camp on the Mogollon Rim. At an elevation of 6,700 feet, the camp offers Phoenix residents a chance to enjoy an outdoor experience in Arizona's high country pine forests. The cost is $40 per adult and $10 for children 17 and under. All youth participants must be accompanied by an adult. The cost includes Friday dinner, three meals on Saturday and Sunday breakfast. Campers can either use their own gear or arrange to use loaner or fixed tents on site. Parks and Recreation Department staff will lead guided outdoor activities. Campers need to be able to transport themselves to the Camp and all activities. A trip orientation will be held approximately a week prior to each trip. Staff will follow up with trip and orientation details. The trips activities will include programming with horses. Participants must have a Phoenix Recreation Membership Card ($10).
