NIGHT CRITTER EXPLORATION - FAMILY SUNSET/MOON HIKE #52669--  Join park rangers for an indoor exploration of desert critters that become active mostly at night! The exploring will continue outdoors during a short hike to look and listen for these fascinating night critters. The hike will be 1 - 2 miles on rocky and rolling terrain, beginning at sunset, and ending under the light of the almost full moon. 6:30-9 p.m. Front Doors - North Mountain Visitors Center, 12950 N. 7th St., 602 495-5520. LIGHT UP THE SKY--  Each year the city hosts a free community Independence Day celebration “Light up the Sky.”  The celebration has been going on for over 20 years. We have conducted the event at Maryvale Baseball Stadium for the past 6 years impacting over 80,000 community residents annually.  This year’s event, scheduled from 7-9 p.m., will again be an opportunity for family and friends to gather at the park, meet their neighbors and celebrate, as a community, the true spirit of the holiday.  The highlight of the program is of course the outstanding display of fireworks that concludes the event.  For more information call  (602) 262-5051 or via email at jermel.stevenson@phoenix.gov.

2ND ANNUAL FREEDOM WIRELESS FABULOUS PHOENIX FOURTH—  Help celebrate our country’s freedom once again at Steele Indian School Park, 3rd Street and Indian School Rd.  The fun will begin at 6 p.m. with an expanded fireworks display beginning at 9:30 p.m. There will be two stages of entertainment, Kids World area, Classic Car exhibit, refreshment vendors, and more! CAMP COLLEY FAMILY HORSES TRIP #57887--  The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department is offering a family camping trip to Camp Colley, the department's outdoor adventure camp on the Mogollon Rim. At an elevation of 6,700 feet, the camp offers Phoenix residents a chance to enjoy an outdoor experience in Arizona's high country pine forests. The cost is $40 per adult and $10 for children 17 and under. All youth participants must be accompanied by an adult. The cost includes Friday dinner, three meals on Saturday and Sunday breakfast. Campers can either use their own gear or arrange to use loaner or fixed tents on site. Parks and Recreation Department staff will lead guided outdoor activities. Campers need to be able to transport themselves to the Camp and all activities. A trip orientation will be held approximately a week prior to each trip. Staff will follow up with trip and orientation details. The trips activities will include programming with horses. Participants must have a Phoenix Recreation Membership Card ($10). PECOS TEEN VOLUNTEER PROGRAM #57938--  Opportunity for teens, ages 13-18, to be part of a summer recreation program and learn skills that will assist them in future jobs and public service areas. Teens will assist in activity implementation of summer general recreation program for those 6-12 years old at the Pecos Community Center. 7:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. Teens must be at least 13 years old at start of program. $10 cost covers two program shirts and ID badge. Also, a volunteer application will need to be completed after registration. Pick up application at the front desk at Pecos Community Center. HANDS-ON HERITAGE HOUSE-- Come join fun historical hands-on activities and exhibits inside the California bungalow style Stevens-Haustgen House. Look through a stereoscope, try your hand at old fashioned games, investigate the tools of kitchen and laundry duties over 100 years ago and more. This participatory exhibit space is also the headquarters of our scheduled school tours and Heritage Saturday activities. Friday Mornings
FRIDAY MORNINGS FOR RAMBLE WITH THE RIO RANGERS--  Join park rangers at the Rio Salado Habitat Restoration Area for this free, weekly interpretive walk and talk. This is a moderately paced guided walk for all ages and all skill levels. As participants walk the trails park rangers will provide information on the City’s river restoration efforts and discuss a selected nature topic with participants. What to bring: walking shoes, water bottle, sunscreen, and a hat. Meet at Rio Salado Habitat, 2439 South Central Ave. Cost: Free. For more information call: 602 262-6863. Third Friday of each month

ARCHAEOLOGY FOR KIDS--  Become a Junior Archaeologist! Learn about the science of archaeology and the Hohokam people by participating in a simulated excavation of a Hohokam pithouse. Actual Hohokam artifacts are used in this program. Classes are generally October - May, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., and are divided by age (ages 7-11 first Saturday, 10-14 third Saturday). Advance registration required. Specially arranged workshops are available for groups of ten or more. Second Sunday, monthly
EXPANDED SILENT SUNDAYS TO NORTH MOUNTAIN PARK-- Cyclists, skateboarders, wheelchair users and stroller-riding tots will soon get to call the roads of North Mountain Park their own one day each month when the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department expands it’s popular Silent Sunday event to the area beginning in February.  North Mountain Park, 10600 N. 7th Street, will host Silent Sundays from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. on the second Sunday of each month. Vehicles will park in the lot at the Havasupai Ramada reserving the park’s roadways for non-motorized use. Trailhead access sites outside of the park will remain open to vehicles. The kickoff event is Feb. 8 with the remaining 2009 dates: May 10, June 14, July 12, Aug. 9, Sept. 13, Oct. 11, Nov. 8, and Dec. 13. For more information call (602) 495-5506.
