Smooth Ride: tips for a courteous bus trip

There are rules and then there are courtesies. On a bus, rules are signed so that both first-time and veteran riders know what to do. Being nice and looking out for fellow passengers not only help keeps the buses rolling but makes sharing the ride more pleasant.

• Have exact fare (cash, pass, or transfer slip) ready to go. It quickens the boarding process for everyone.
• Get a transfer slip from the bus operator right after you pay.
• Allow those who are exiting the bus to get off before you get on.
• Enter the bus in an orderly fashion.
• If you have a question for the operator, allow others to board ahead of you.
• If you see the bus is getting crowded move your personal belongs off the seats so others can sit down.
• Move to a window seat if another passenger needs a seat next to you.
• When you can, please give up your seat to others who may need it such as seniors or people with disabilities.
• Move to the rear of the bus to create room for entering passengers.
• Standing passengers need to hold on to the back of seats, straps, and railings during the ride. Seated passengers should help accommodate those standing.
• Rather than reaching for the stop request cord, ask the passenger seated next to it to pull it for you.
• The bus operator can activate the transfer light to notify an oncoming bus of transferring passengers. Notify the bus operator in enough time so that the light is effective.
• Exit at the back door but make way for passengers who need to exit from the front (seniors, persons with bikes on front rack). If a person in a wheelchair is exiting, you should exit first.
• When exiting the bus, watch for pedestrians and bicyclists on the sidewalk.
