Smoke Free Arizona Initiative, Proposition 201
as applied to city-owned transit vehicles and facilities in Phoenix

The anti-smoking provisions in Arizona Revised Statute (A.R.S.) 35-601.01 begins May 1, 2007. The regulations cover the reasonable distance that smoking can take place from the entrance, windows, and ventilation system of structures.

How regulations are applied to the transit service owned and operated by the Phoenix Public Transit Department:
City-owned buses and other transit vehicles - No smoking allowed within any vehicle. There is no "buffer zone" applicable to city-owned buses and vehicles.

City-owned signed bus stops - These signs are not subject to the anti-smoking provisions, however, a location may be subject to no smoking regulations because of its proximity to an enclosed area.

City-owned passenger shelters - These facilities are not subject to the anti-smoking provisions, however, a location may be subject to no smoking regulations because of its proximity to an enclosed area.

City-owned park-and-rides - These facilities are are generally not subject to the anti-smoking provisions. The exception is for enclosed structures within these locations; such structures will be posted with the required "No Smoking" signs. No smoke can enter the "buffer zone" of a 20-foot distance from each structure.

City-owned security buildings, customer service offices, and other enclosed transit buildings - These structures are subject to the anti-smoking provisions so will be posted with the required "No Smoking" signs. No smoke can enter the "buffer zone" of a 20-foot distance from each structure.

"No Smoking" Signage
Signs will be posted at every entrance of a city-owned transit facility and on all city-owned buses and other transit vehicles:

City-owned buses and other city-owned transit vehicles will carry required "No Smoking" signs; however, there is no "buffer zone" applicable to city-owned buses.

City-owned transit facilities will be posted with required "No Smoking" signs. No smoke can enter the "buffer zone" of a 20-foot distance from each structure.
