The Public Works Department provides mechanical and electrical maintenance and energy conservation services for city facilities, and procures, manages and maintains the city's fleet of vehicular equipment. The department also provides for the collection and disposal of residential garbage and recyclables.
Collection days changing for 200,000 customers
During the week of July 14, 2008, Phoenix will reroute its fleet of 200 collection vehicle to add an additional regional service center. That means days of collection will change for nearly 200,000 households. During the next four years, collection day changes will impact another 200,000 households. Specific information will be mailed in June to affected customers.

The Public Works Department received Valley Forward's prestigious Crescordia award for the North Gateway Transfer
Station. The North Gateway Transfer Station/Material Recovery Facility, opened in 2006, allows the city to divert up to 320 tons per day of recyclable materials from the municipal waste stream. The facility itself reflects a commitment to environmental awareness.

Major grocery stores citywide participated in the great Phoenix bag give-away in November. Eighty-five stores, including Basha's, Albertson's, Safeway and Ranch Markets handed out free Phoenix-provided cloth bags to encourage residents to use reusable bags for shopping. The distribution is part of a campaign is encourage residents to reduce, reuse and recycle plastics bags, which are not accepted in the city's residential recycling program. Residents should look for Bag Central Station signs at participating stores.
Arcadia residents collect fruit to keep roof rats away
Arcadia-area residents can help keep roof rats away by collecting usable fruit from residential trees. Residents can drop off fruit from 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays through March 22 at the Elks BPOE Scottsdale Lodge, 6398 E. Oak St. By mid-February, more than 31 tons of usable fruit had been collected as part of the annual Arcadia Neighbor to Neighbor campaign to eliminate a popular food source for roof rats, which have plagued the area in previous years.
