The Pueblo Grande Museum offers a
wide variety of interesting and educational activities throughout the
year. Programs offered by the museum fit within its mission to provide
educational experiences that enhance peoples understanding of the Hohokam
people, other peoples of the Greater Southwest, past and present, and

On-site Tours
Hohokam Ruin Tours
Museum docent/volunteer led tours are available by appointment. Group
rates are available. Please call (602) 495-0901 to reserve a tour.
Park of Four Waters Tours
Tours of the Hohokam irrigation canals in the Park of Four Waters are
offered October through April, 10am on the last Saturday of each month.
On-site Programs
Adult Educational Workshops
The Museum offers a wide variety of adult educational workshops-September
through May. Programs include Hohokam and Maricopa pottery, flintknapping,
shell and stone jewelry, Native American basketry, weaving, and more.
Archaeology Lectures
Lectures on various archaeological topics are offered the 1st Wednesday
of each month, September through May.
Docent (Tour Guide) Training Course
The Museum provides training for individuals who would like to become
Docents (tour guides). Docent training is designed to provide volunteers
with the necessary background and experience to give tours and presentations
to school and civic groups. Participants learn about the Hohokam, archaeology,
and cultural interpretation. The development and delivery of oral presentations
is emphasized.
Archaeology for Kids
Learn about the science of archaeology and the Hohokam people by participating
in a simulated excavation of a Hohokam pithouse. Actual Hohokam artifacts
are used in this program. Classes are divided by age. Specially arranged
workshops are available for schools and groups of ten or more. Archaeology
for Kids programs are held on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month,
October through May.
The Hohokam Experience Summer Archaeology Camp
The Hohokam Experience is for children 7-14 years of age. Children learn
about the ancient Hohokam and other people of the American Southwest through
archaeology, hands-on crafts, storytelling, games, and tours of the Museum
exhibits and prehistoric ruins. Each session has a different theme that
explores several aspects of Hohokam and Southwest American Indian culture.
The Hohokam Experience is held June through August.
Off-Site Programs
Petroglyph Discovery Hikes
Petroglyph Discovery Hikes acquaint participants with prehistoric petroglyph
and archaeological sites in the Phoenix metro area. The need to protect
and preserve these important cultural resources is emphasized. Hike participants
are led by experienced museum guides on established trails to view prehistoric
petroglyphs. Petroglyph Discovery Hikes are generally held on the 1st
Wednesday, 2nd Saturday and last Sunday of each month, September through
May.
Archaeology Van Tours
These outings are designed to acquaint participants with prehistoric petroglyph
and archaeological sites in the Southwest. The need to protect and preserve
these important cultural resources is emphasized. Archaeology Van Tours
generally are offered September through May.
Museum on Wheels Outreach Program
This program is an extension of the Education Section of the Pueblo Grande
Museum. The Museum on Wheels Outreach Program is an on-call educational
program that is designed to bring the Pueblo Grande Museum to the Phoenix
Metropolitan community.
