Rio Salado Project
Activities & Facilities

Workers are making steady progress installing the features that will allow visitors to full appreciated the habitat. The ten-mile trail system already is taking shape. The trails, a combination of hard and soft-surface trails, will allow visitors to explore the habitat up close.

Workers also are finishing up work on the staging area, from which bikers, equestrians and hikers can set out into the project. The staging area features a restroom, parking, information kiosk and overlooks.

Future features will include an equestrian staging area water treatment facilities. Two Gateway plazas will greet visitors when Phoenix Rio Salado opens on November 5, 2005.

Phoenix Rio Salado also is a wonderful educational tool for school-age kids. Through our participation with Service at Salado, students can learn about riparian ecosystems by actually helping with the restoration efforts.

The secvond gateway at Rio Salado is nearing completion.

This Gateway, on Central Avenue and the Salt River, was the first constructed at the project site. Gateway columns are adorned with interpretive tiles. Designed by a local artist, the tiles document the physical history of the Salt River.

Examples of the tiles can be seen at the top of each of the main Rio Salado pages next to the headings.
