The Rio Salado Habitat Restoration Area stretches along five miles of the Salt River just south of downtown Phoenix. Once a dump site, the area is now a lush riparian corridor with five miles of paved and dirt trails dotted with unique design and user features.

Bird watchers have spotted more than 200 species of birds (and counting...) in Rio Salado's varied habitats from wetland ponds to mesquite bosque to cottonwood/willow forest. Hike, bike, wheelchair, jog, horseback -- anyone can access Rio Salado and experience the Salt River's rich and varied wildlife as it once was -- all in the heart of the nation's fifth largest city.

Trailheads and Parking Locations
The four trailheads listed below provide access to the paved trails. We also recommend calling the ranger office at (602) 262-6863 or (602) 262-6713 (tty) with any questions or concerns before heading out to the area.

Please note that leashed dogs are allowed on the hard surface (asphalt) trails only.  The primary goal of the project is to reestablish sensitive riparian habitat that disappeared from the Valley decades ago. Please do your part to allow the habitat at Phoenix Rio Salado to thrive and grow by keeping your dog on a leash and removing and properly disposing all pet waste.
