Arizona Opera

Founded in 1971 by a group of opera enthusiasts, Arizona Opera has proudly served the communities of Arizona for nearly 30 years. The organization's first production, The Barber of Seville, Phoenix Stages logo used as link to home pagewas presented on a minimal budget and over the next ten years, the fledgling company's modest productions were well received. In 1983, the arrival of General Director Glynn Ross brought continued expansion, and by 1996 Arizona Opera achieved international acclaim for the ambitious Ring Cycle project.

The retirement of Glynn Ross in 1998 led to a fresh, new direction for the organization with the arrival of young, energetic General Director David Speers. Within his first year, artistic excellence was achieved through increased rehearsal time, innovative sets, costumes and lighting, and the engagement of the highest caliber of young artists. The result--record subscription sales, increased single ticket sales, sold out productions and enthusiastic critical acclaim--was an important endorsement by the community.

After an international search for an Artistic Director, the Board of Trustees appointed Grammy-winning and Metropolitan Opera staff conductor Joel Revzen in August of 2003, heralding a new artistic vision for a solid regional opera company.

Maestro Revzen's plans for Arizona Opera include continued artistic growth and the expansion of the education department to include a young singers' training program. For more information about Joel Revzen and Arizona Opera, log on to www.azopera.org
