Adopt-A-Street Program |
If you would like to become involved in the community and help keep Phoenix neighborhoods clean, contact the city's "Adopt-A-Street" program.You, your family, school, church, company or neighborhood organization can get involved.
All volunteers must do is care for and improve the aesthetics on both sides of a one-mile section of a Phoenix city street. The city places a sign at the beginning and end of the street to recognize the group's efforts.
The cleanup efforts of approximately 510 miles of city streets include litter and trash pickup, weed and grass removal, painting over graffiti and installing and maintaining landscaping. Volunteers may work on their street as needed, and a minimum of four cleanups a year are recommended. The city provides trash bags and will pick up contained trash.
The program was created in 1991 in response to corporations and civic groups who were interested in keeping Phoenix thoroughfares clean and attractive. Because of the overwhelmingly positive response to the program, it was expanded in 1992 to include individuals, families, schools, scout troops, etc. Approximately two-thirds of Phoenix's major and collector streets have been adopted.
